Demarco is a dancehall star, producer, video director and all-around Jamaican music legend. His signature singles “Fallen Soldiers” and “I Love My Life” are indelibly woven into the fabric of modern Jamaica, while songs like “No Wahala” (featuring Akon and Runtown) have put him at the forefront of the burgeoning fusion between reggae and afrobeats. Behind the scenes, he’s produced some of modern dancehall’s definitive riddims (The Mission, Shoot Out) as well as crossover smashes like Charly Black “Gyal You A Party Animal,” and written songs for artists ranging from Bounty Killer to Rihanna. More than a decade deep into a career that’s taken him from Jamaica to the States and back again, Demarco is finally set to release his debut album, Melody, this year via Oakland’s Ineffable Records.
FMM: You are best known for his hit singles “Duppy Know Ah Who Fi Frighten”, featuring on the Shoot Out Riddim, “Fallen Soldiers”, “True Friend” and “Show It (So Sexy)”. How have you evolved as an artist?
I love being behind the scenes with recording and production, and I’m getting more into shooting videos and creative direction too, but I feel more comfortable than ever as an artist out in front. I dug deep into production, which helped me develop my sound. In working with others, I was able to learn more about my capabilities and also my desires.
FMM: Tell us about your album, Melody. Why was this so important to you?
This album is very special to me for several reasons. It took more than a decade to release because my former record label had taken advantage of me early on in my career and was stuck in contractual obligations. Melody, the title, also bears significance as the project as it is named after my daughter and reflects the melodic sensibilities that define the album. I also love that I brought on numerous talents and made history by being the only artist to have both Beenie Man and Bounty Killer on the same tune. The 16 track album features so many greats: Sean Paul, Konshens, Sarkodie, Spice, Stephen Marley, Chronic Law, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Ky-Mani Marley, and Shaggy.
FMM: What are your new projects?
I’m working on some music videos now, and that’s become a more significant part of my most recent efforts. Not too long ago, I released a video short with Shaggy for the song “Do It Again,” and it premiered on media heavyweight the Fader in coordination with the album debut. That project got me excited to expand my repertoire regarding visuals. However, as always, I’m still in the studio working on beats and laying down some tracks.
FMM: Are you working on any collaborations?
Collaborations are a big thing for me. I like working with others, be it my project or theirs. It may be deliberate to put two people together, but I understand the importance of feeling the dynamic between people. By allowing the energy and artistry to flow naturally and never force it, a more authentic connection is forged, and usually, the work reflects that.
FMM: What would fans be surprised to know about you?
Fans may be surprised to know I’m a homebody. I can work from home, though, and I have a home studio set up in Atlanta, so I guess that also makes me a workaholic by default, lol. It’s nice to have the opportunity to be with my family and also get inspired to create something while in a safe space and comfortable environment.
FMM: Is 2022 your year?
Yes, every year is my year. I will make the most of it. I look forward to connecting and networking with other massive players in the music industry. I think some of my more mainstream songs would work well for movies and commercials. I want the chance to start shopping that concept around and see what hits.
