Mike Westerband CEO and Creative Director of Jewelry Brand Timelapse Co

What led you to launch Timelapse Co?

Aside from Timelapse Co. I’m an investor in a number of projects and companies, one of which is a music event promotion company that was formed before Timelapse’s inception. Timelapse Co. originally started as just a side project, where along with a friend we began selling small trinkets and pieces of art at our events just for fun, and eventually it took off and became more organized as demand increased. At a certain point, we decided to turn the project into a formal company, added additional designs while expanding our marketing, and things further developed from there. Timelapse has really been a passion project that has allowed us to take our novel designs and share them with the world in an exciting new way, while also providing an additional service for people through our custom work which allows them to bring to life nearly any creation they desire. https://timelapseco.com/

The Timelapse Collections focus on blurring the lines between art, craft, and fashion. Explain.

We don’t really consider ourselves a fashion company or a jewelry company in the traditional senses, but rather an artistic company that delivers our art through wearable mediums. As an art company, our focus isn’t so much on mass marketing and selling for profit, but about the process and our artistic expression. Being works of art in our mind, we really strive to deliver pieces of the highest quality, and as such each piece is hand-crafted and finished so we can ensure that our quality is maintained and meets our highest standards. It’s really an outlook and approach that drives a lot in the way that we operate and look at what we do, instead of being sales-focused or just focused on capturing the latest trends.

Tell us about the Timelapse pieces.

As a bit of an irony, our classic pieces which we initially became known for utilize vintage and antique watch movements as the focal points of their designs, and since they no longer function as actual timepieces, they really could be considered timeless. Some of these movements are decades old, and some have even been over a century old, which in themselves can be said to have traversed the ages since the worlds of fashion and design have changed so much since they were made. But that aside, I think it can also fittingly be used as a descriptor for our design characteristics, since I think our designs can’t easily be pigeonholed into a single aesthetic. We’ve had customers from all walks of life, age groups, and style profiles buy and wear our pieces, which is something that we’re really proud of.

Tell us about your Celebrity Influencer Collaborations.

Our Collaboration projects are something that we’re really excited about and really enjoy doing. Aside from the opportunity to meet and work with really interesting and amazing individuals, the collaborations are a way for the influencers and ourselves to extend our reach and mutually share with the world pieces of ourselves that might not otherwise have the opportunity to be shared. The pieces that we do always have meaning behind them and are inspired by events, situations, or things that are personally meaningful to our collaborators. So, when we’re able to turn them into pieces that fans and followers can hold and wear, they become powerful experiential items that help deepen the connection between our collaborators and their audiences that’s difficult to similarly achieve otherwise. We’ve worked with a number of celebrity influencers and have plans to work with a lot more, so keep an eye out for those in the future!

What are their favorite pieces?

You know, this is an interesting question and I’ve honestly never asked any of the collaborators if they had a favorite piece over the ones they’ve created. Jewelry is really a way to express yourself, and I’ve found that most of the jewelry people wear usually has some type of meaning behind it, which is why they wear it in the first place. We spend a lot of time during the design process identifying things that can convey something personal about the collaborator that they’d like to share with the world. Since we draw on those personal aspects that have meaning for each collaborator, I would probably assume that for each one of our collaborators, the piece that they’ve worked on for so long to perfect and shape would probably be their favorite piece.

You also offer custom creations. Can you share your favorite?

Our custom creations are a really special offering and actually are some of our favorite pieces to do, since they’re really an opportunity for our clients to express themselves in any way they see fit, and it’s a privilege for us to help them achieve that. I don’t think I have a single favorite since each one of the custom creations has been really beautiful and unique, but one of them would probably be one from a client who loved the simplicity of our Verne design but wanted to spruce it up a bit by using a solid 18k gold bezel and we paired it with a completely raw, black diamond chain. It was an opportunity for us to really just do something different and let our design imaginations run wild, which turned out to be really beautiful. Another really amazing piece that we made was from a client who wanted to use the piece as a life counter for the card game Magic the Gathering. We made a solid 14k yellow gold bezel for the watch movement, but on the back, we included two platinum number dials which he could spin to use as the life counter. To top it off, we included inset sapphires and his initials engraved into the piece for a really special, personal touch. These are just a couple examples of some of the amazing designs people come up with, and we’re really honored to be a part of our customers’ lives when they come to us for any custom work.

What is next for Timelapse?

Currently we’re planning on expanding our offerings and releasing new collections in the near future, drawing inspiration from various walks of life that we’re really excited about. In addition, we’re working on more collaborations with celebrities and influencers, while expanding our retail presence so more people can be exposed to our art. Definitely keep an eye out as we continue to develop for you, since our blessed fans and customers are the reason why we do what we do!
